August is usually a slower time in Washington, D.C., as Congress breaks for its long summer recess and the city quiets down for a bit. At ConservAmerica, however, we’ve been full steam ahead.

This past month we published a piece with Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT) on federal permitting, rolled out a paper on data centers with Dream.org, announced a new partnership with ACC, and decided it was about time we started a Substack. Lots happening so let’s get into it.

We kicked off the month with a piece in The Hill ([link removed]) co-authored by ConservAmerica President Jeff Kupfer and Roosevelt Conservation Caucus member Congresswoman Celeste Maloy (R-UT). The need for an overhaul of our federal permitting process is no secret, nor is our ([link removed]) passion ([link removed]) for ([link removed]) seeing ([link removed]) change ([link removed]) . Rep. Maloy’s Full Responsibility and Expedited Enforcement (FREE) Act ([link removed]) would establish clearer
standards and predictable timelines while maintaining environmental safeguards. A more efficient, accountable permitting system can strengthen conservation while supporting energy development, infrastructure investment, and economic growth. Thank you to Rep. Maloy for trying to make it happen.

Onerous permitting processes are not the only hurdles to progress. Community opposition has become one of the largest obstacles to data center development. We partnered with ([link removed]) Dream.org on a new white paper, Building Better Neighbors: Best Practices for Responsible Data Center Development ([link removed]) , to examine the issues driving community conflict and identify best practices to reduce opposition and improve outcomes. We believe there are practical, achievable steps that industry can voluntarily adopt to address community concerns. Demand for data and computing will continue to reshape the American economy; we need to ensure that growth is both responsible and sustainable.

Last week we announced our strategic partnership ([link removed]) with the American Conservation Coalition (ACC), bringing together two leading voices in the conservative environmental movement. We have worked in parallel to, and sometimes jointly united by, a belief that conservation, economic prosperity, and American ingenuity go hand-in-hand. This partnership is about more than combining efforts. It is about building a stronger and more influential conservative conservation movement capable of shaping the national agenda on energy, the environment, and natural resources. We are thrilled to formalize an arrangement that will help us both strengthen our efforts and tackle overlapping policy initiatives, including data center development, public lands management, technological innovation, and unleashing American energy.
