Mary is the great silver lining in this stormy, gloomy and cloudy chapter of our nation's story, and I'll tell you why.
As a professional therapist by training, Mary takes human psychology—pathology, projection and prevarication, obsession, sadism and masochism, narcissism—seriously. It shows in how she talks about her uncle: she's not interested in outrage apart from understanding and discovery. She's interested in what makes people bully, what makes people give in to fear, and what it takes to get people past fear to strong action.
For years now, Mary has been a stalwart in the American resistance to the corruption, authoritarian politics and public sadism exploited and unleashed by her uncle Donald, even at great personal risk and cost to herself. She could have stayed quiet and kept her name out of the headlines, but she didn't. She stood strong. She fought back.
Mary stepped into the spotlight not out of narcissistic compulsion, but because there is no other choice. It reminds me of investigating the violent insurrection of January 6th, knowing full well all of the threats of violence and retribution that would follow.
Last month, I met with Mary on the Hill. We talked about what keeps both of us up at night: how billionaires and extremists keep finding new ways to bend our government to their will, and what it's going to take to stop them from ruining our constitutional democracy.
