As flags flew at half staff all across the United States, I flew home to North Carolina and made the drive across the mountain to East Tennessee this weekend to preach at the St Johns Episcopal Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. It was a joy to be with the congregation for their annual “Rally Weekend,” but it was also a pilgrimage of sorts for me. As I drove through the Appalachian hills where I grew up, I reflected on how Matthew’s Gospel and the life that Dolly Parton lived both invite us to reflect on what we chose to do with the gifts we are given.
