Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902) – A close ally of Susan B. Anthony, Stanton was a leading thinker and writer in the women’s rights movement. She organized the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, where she introduced the Declaration of Sentiments demanding equal rights for women. Stanton fought for suffrage, legal reform, and educational opportunities for women. She also challenged societal norms with her critiques of religion’s role in women’s subjugation. Stanton’s intellectual leadership helped define the early feminist movement in America.

Later in life, Stanton published The Woman’s Bible (1895), a controversial critique of the way religion was used to oppress women. The work was so divisive that even some fellow suffragists distanced themselves from it. Stanton argued that traditional biblical interpretations had denied women autonomy and equality. Her bold examination of sacred texts cemented her reputation as a fearless iconoclast, unafraid to challenge even the most sacred institutions.
