Mazda’s Roadside Safety Feature Is Mostly Someone Else’s Work
American Motor Voice

A motorcyclist riding after dark near the Putnam County Sheriff's Office on August 25 dropped straight into a rain-triggered sinkhole that had opened without warning on an unlit stretch of road. The bike was damaged, but the rider walked away — officials credited his low speed at the time of impact as the reason he escaped without serious injury (fox59.com).

The sheriff's office even jokingly cited Indiana code for parking on a highway, referencing the motorcycle sitting in the hole. Multiple fire departments, conservation officers, and Indiana State Police responded to the scene.

Mazda North American Operations announced a safety collaboration with AAA and HAAS Alert that uses HAAS Alert's existing Safety Cloud platform to warn approaching drivers when a Mazda vehicle is stranded on the roadside (agent-entrepreneur.com). When an eligible Mazda owner requests roadside assistance, their location is broadcast as a digital alert to nearby drivers through mapping apps like Waze and Apple Maps, or through Safety Cloud-connected vehicles — though the feature only works if approaching drivers happen to be using a compatible app, and Mazda did not specify which models or markets are eligible (agent-entrepreneur.com).

The catch is that the underlying technology was developed entirely by HAAS Alert and was already deployed with AAA's Auto Club Enterprises as early as 2024, serving the same function for stranded motorists in Southern California (haasalert.com). Mazda's role appears to be more about branding and integration than building anything new, even as the company's safety strategy director Jennifer Morrison framed the feature as protecting both Mazda customers and everyone else on the road (agent-entrepreneur.com).

NASCAR's full 2027 schedule confirms a return to Naval Base Coronado in San Diego on August 1, with both the Cup and O'Reilly Auto Parts Series racing the temporary 3.4-mile street course for a second consecutive year (nascar.com). The Coronado race will serve as a championship round of the NASCAR In-Season Challenge, a midseason tournament comprising five races and 32 drivers (coronadotimes.com), and the series has signaled plans to rotate the military-base format to other U.S. installations beginning in 2028 (snaplap.net).

Elsewhere on the calendar, the All-Star Race moves back to North Wilkesboro Speedway, the 0.625-mile short track that hosted the exhibition from 2023–2025, after a one-year stop at Dover Motor Speedway; the weekend will include the first O'Reilly Series race at the track since 1985 (si.com). Dover, in turn, regains a points-paying Cup event for 2027 (motorsport.com).

Xingyu Automotive Lighting Systems, China's largest automotive lighting supplier and a key vendor for Volkswagen and BYD, hired over 400 fresh graduates — most with master's degrees, some with doctorates — through campus recruitment in July 2026, only to pressure more than 100 of them into resignation or reassignment to manual assembly-line positions within weeks (eu.36kr.com). Multiple reports indicated that graduates recruited for technical roles were forced to choose between quitting or being transferred to menial tasks like tightening screws on the production line (eu.36kr.com).

The controversy triggered a government labor bureau investigation, the suspension of the company's HR director, and a formal corporate apology (theautowire.com). The timing was especially damaging: Xingyu posted Q1 2026 revenue of 3.43 billion yuan — up 10.8% year-over-year with healthy profit growth — and had resubmitted its Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing application just one week before the forced-resignation interviews began (eu.36kr.com). Industry observers noted the incident exposes broader talent management failures in China's rapidly expanding automotive supply chain.
