Hi John, Pramila
Jayapal here.
Before I ever ran for office, I was an organizer. After 9/11, when hate
crimes against Muslim, Sikh, and South Asian people were spiking across
the country, I helped found OneAmerica. We knocked on doors and built
power with immigrant families block by block.
I still believe in that kind of organizing. Movements outside of
government are how change begins.
But I learned something along the way: Organizing on the outside is even
more effective when you also have people organizing on the inside.
That’s why I ran for Congress.
I didn’t do it to leave organizing behind, but to bring our work to the
inside of a system that too often shuts regular people out.
In the years since I first ran, I’ve worked to build our movement and set
the stage for a new generation of bold, progressive leaders like Abdul
El-Sayed to run and win.
That’s the theory of change I believe in: Outside pressure and inside
power get results.
