John,

Tensions across the nation are high as people demand
change and accountability from law enforcement in wake of yet
another death of an innocent black man at the hands of police.

But instead of seeking unity and understanding in these
times of racial reconciliation, one of Hank’s colleagues went off
the deep end with a violent threat to Black protesters:

You read that right, John: Rep.
Clay Higgins from Louisiana heard rumors swirling about the
presence of an armed Black militia group peacefully demonstrating
against police violence, and responded by threatening to, “drop
any 10 of you where you stand.”

“That’s not a challenge, fellas. It’s a promise,” he
wrote in his racist social media rant. These violent threats are
abhorrent and in wake of the Kenosha shooting, only serve to
encourage more vigilante violence against protesters.

These murderous sentiments are inappropriate for any
American to publicize, much less a sitting Congressman. Will you
join us in fighting back against Clay Higgins’ violent threats?

Last time we checked, open carrying in the state of
Louisiana was perfectly legal and would not constitute a violent
threat on its own — something Clay Higgins should know a thing or
two about considering he’s a card-carrying NRA member and an
outspoken advocate for gun rights.

In fact, one of his campaign ads features him wearing a
SWAT vest and shooting a rifle. For Clay Higgins to draw the line
in the sand at armed Black people protesting against the killing
of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd tells us it was never really
about the guns — it’s about defending and upholding structures of
white supremacy.

Every Democrat and Republican alike ought to condemn this
charged rhetoric, which has no place in the halls of Congress.

We must keep calling out this type of white supremacist
rhetoric when we see it. Because while Clay Higgins might be an
outlier for now, he won’t be for long with other far-right
conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene on their way to
Congress to reinforce those dangerous views. We must stay
vigilant, and we must not let them get away with their violent
threats.
