Let's talk about Zombie Mines.
These are mines that corporations have abandoned all over the country, with many of them in Pennsylvania.
What happens is mining companies walk away from these mines and they pollute our streams, our waterways, and our soil.
It probably won't surprise you to hear that some of these companies exploit loopholes in our law to keep these mines technically active so they do not have to pay the cost of cleanup. Others may declare bankruptcy to restructure their assets and avoid doing the environmental work necessary to protect our communities.
And who pays that multi-billion tab for reclamation when these companies find a loophole to avoid their responsibilities?
You do. We all do.
I introduced a bill with Congresswoman Lee to end these practices.
