For years, parents have been sounding the alarm about what social media is doing to our kids. Now, Meta has finally confirmed what we’ve been saying all along:

This week, the social media giant agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims that Facebook and Instagram were designed to keep children hooked — and agreed to new safeguards like daily time limits, nighttime and school-day restrictions, limits on beauty filters, and stronger parental controls.

This is a major victory for every parent and advocate who refused to stop fighting. But as a mom of two daughters, I keep coming back to one question: Why did it take years of lawsuits and billions of dollars to get here?

Families shouldn’t have to take one of the largest corporations in the world to court just to keep their kids safe online. That’s why for years, I’ve been fighting in Congress to hold Big Tech accountable — from pressing Mark Zuckerberg directly about addictive design features targeting children, to helping pass the bipartisan KIDS Act through the House this summer to better protect kids and teens online and rein in social media giants like Meta.

We know the problem, and we know there are solutions. I’ve been fighting for protections for years, and I’m not stopping now – but I can’t do this work without your support.
