John,

Today our nation is celebrating Labor Day — a day where we can rest and reflect on every worker who has helped build and sustain our country. It’s a day to take pride in the hard work we do to create a better future for ourselves and those who will come after us.

I encourage us all to take a moment to acknowledge the importance of labor unions and all they have done to improve workers’ lives, protect them, and give them a voice.

Even though our nation has accomplished so much since the labor strike movements that led to Labor Day, I would be remiss if I didn’t call attention to all the work that still needs to be done.

Right here, in our very own Golden State, where the minimum wage is still below $15 an hour, barely enough to make ends meet, we must do better to support our working families and fight to raise the minimum wage to a livable wage. I stand in solidarity with every worker on strike fighting for better working conditions.

Furthermore, while our country is navigating this unprecedented health crisis, its health care workers, postal workers, teachers, grocery store employees, and so many more who are always on call and unable to rest while working in unstable and unsafe conditions. We must pass the HEROES Act to provide frontline workers the support they need and deserve, especially because of the work they do to keep us safe and sound.

Today is a day of celebration and rest. But we must remember that we cannot truly rest until our work is done — until our country is a country of equal opportunity where everyone no matter their race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and varying levels of disability can work, make a livable wage, and can have an opportunity to succeed.

Together, we can bring forth progressive change and build a nation that values its citizens and works to uplift everyone, including our most vulnerable communities.

Thank you for your support and I hope you are staying safe. Have a wonderful Labor Day.

In solidarity,

Barbara Lee
