It was another busy week in the district meeting with voters, stakeholders,
and community leaders across western Minnesota to hammer out the issues that
make our community move and shake. Here’s what you need to know.
Last week, I joined the American Coalition for Ethanol at its annual meeting,
where I was honored to accept its 2026 Legislative Leadership Award. The
recognition really belongs to the farmers and producers across our district who
have been making the case for year-round E15 for years. Back in May, we got our
bill through the House with strong bipartisan support, which was no small feat.
Now the Senate Ag Committee's farm bill draft has included E15 language! While
their version differs from ours, I am hopeful we can bring the two together.
The coalition we built in the House was remarkable. Small refineries, large
refineries, and the American Petroleum Institute all came on board, and I will
keep working to hold that coalition together until year-round E15 is finally
the law of the land.
I was also glad to sit down with representatives from the American Coalition
for Rural Engagement (ACRE), who work to protect the federal crop insurance
program on behalf of farmers and ranchers across the country. They recognized
my team for the work we have done to make sure producers have real access to
coverage and risk management tools, and I appreciated the conversation. Crop
insurance is the backbone of the farm safety net in our district. When a season
goes bad, and in agriculture it eventually does, our producers need to know
there is a program they can count on instead of waiting on Washington to pass
another one-off disaster package. That’s exactly why I introduced theFARMER Ac
t, to strengthen premium support and improve supplemental coverage options. It
was truly a great conversation, and I look forward to continuing to work with
ACRE as a partner in Congress.
On Thursday, I participated in a “Meet the Candidate” forum, hosted by the
Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative in Wadena. The questions covered issues
important to their members, such as the self-governance model of cooperatives,
the role of renewables in the energy mix, and dealing with fraud in Minnesota.
The most surprising thing about the responses about fraud was how consistently
the Democrat candidates tried to downplay the severity of it! One candidate
argued that the total isn’t as high as has been claimed because “only” $500
million has been prosecuted so far. I couldn’t believe my ears. Every dollar
stolen from taxpayers is too much. That’s why I have been pressing for answers
and accountability going back to September 2022 when I joined my Minnesota
Republican colleagues for answers from the USDA about their nutrition programs.
After congressional testimony from Minnesota officials and public servants, I
authored and co-sponsored a series of bills to better identify, prevent, and
have accountability for fraud in taxpayer-funded programs as well as to protect
the brave whistleblowers who step forward. Fraud is wrong, plain and simple,
and I will continue to be active in rooting it out.
