This Labor Day hits differently than others, John.
Labor Day is a celebration of our nation’s workers and labor movement, which has been on the frontlines of the fight for a living wage, critical workplace protections, and economic equality for generations.
This year especially, we want to honor the workers who have always been essential, and who have stepped up to support our communities during COVID-19.
During this pandemic, the importance and sacrifice of our essential workers has never been more clear. And yet, millions of workers have been forced to risk their health and the health of their loved ones at the hands of their employers. Nurses are still not being given the protections they need and teachers are being forced back into classrooms – just to name a few.
Meanwhile, this pandemic has exacerbated deeply entrenched injustices and inequalities that have long existed in our country. While 40 million people have lost their jobs, those at the very top have only gotten richer.1
We’ve been fighting for protections for nurses and legislation like the HEROES Act and Essential Worker Bill of Rights to give women and working families the relief they deserve. But we must do more.
It’s time that we treat our essential workers as essential – that means a living wage, paid family leave, health care, workplace protections, paid sick leave, and more.
In solidarity,
Women’s March Team
