I want to make sure we never forget why we celebrate today.
Years ago, workers from across the country came together and demanded certain rights in the workplace -- rights that Kansas workers still benefit from today. Thanks to the labor movement we have anti-discrimination laws, strong child labor laws, a forty-hour work week, overtime pay, and weekends off.
The labor movement started a revolution in the workplace, but we still have work left to end injustices in the workplace. The wage gap is still present, the minimum wage is not a living wage, and we don’t have guaranteed paid family leave.
So today, I want you to enjoy your holiday and remember the hard working women and men who made it possible. Tomorrow, we get back to work fighting for workers' rights across Kansas.
