John.

It's Labor Day -- and while it's typically spent marking the end of summer with parades and cookouts, in our house, it's always meant celebrating union workers.

Because I'm a proud former union member and leader.

When I went to community college, I worked on campus to help pay for my tuition. I joined the classified employees' union -- California Schools Employee Association Chapter 725 -- even becoming president. I even negotiated our contract when I was still in my 20s.

I never forgot what my union meant to me. So when I served on my local school board and in the state Assembly, I supported all the union teachers, nurses, administrators, and other school staff who are responsible for our kids' education.

And now, I'm proud to have their support. I've been endorsed by IAFF, NEA, CFT, the LA County Federation of Labor, SEIU California, AFSCME, UNITE HERE Local 11, and my very own CSEA.

These unions fight hard on behalf of their members and those they serve. That's more important now than ever -- amidst the worst public health crisis in a century and an unemployment crisis on par with the Great Depression. Working folks need unions at the bargaining table and a government that works for them.

That's one of the many reasons I support the HEROES Act -- necessary coronavirus relief legislation the House passed months ago, which will provide extended unemployment benefits to those who have lost jobs because of the pandemic and so much more.

It's why I support a $15 an hour minimum wage. We have to ensure that people working a full time job can actually afford to put food on the table and keep a roof over their families' heads.

And it's why I will fight to #SaveTheUSPS, because our Postal Service provides good-paying union jobs for nearly 600,000 Americans -- including nearly 100,000 veterans -- and is a critical service, especially now.

Everyone deserves a job that pays a living wage. Everyone deserves a secure retirement. Everyone deserves a workplace that is safe. And we'll never stop fighting until that's a reality.

In solidarity,

Christy
