Quick one before the month closes.

You may know the shorthand version of me: former congressman, former state senator, former White House staffer. But the reason behind all of it is a lot more personal than my resume.

I lost my dad to cancer when I was in high school. He taught me to work hard and stick up for people. Watching a health care system fail our family when we needed it most is a big reason I do this work today. Nobody should have to go through what we went through — and it's why fixing our broken health care system has never been an abstract issue for me.

That's the honest answer to why I've spent my life in public service. Here's the short version of how I've tried to live it out: I worked for two White House administrations, including President Obama's. I started a business in North Carolina, raised my kids here. Ran for the state senate. And then in 2022 I flipped a Republican congressional seat that people said couldn't be flipped.

Republicans couldn't beat me at the ballot box, so they gerrymandered the map and erased my district. That's the part that still gets me. But I don't quit fights that matter, and I've got a lot of work left to do.
