Following months of unrest across the country stemming from anti-Black police violence, we are faced with yet another glaring example of the systemic racism that is rooted in our justice system: Jacob Blake was shot in the back 7 times by Kenosha, Wisconsin police officers on August 23, 2020.
Officers were on the scene due to a fight, which Jacob Blake was trying to break up. Blake, who was unarmed when he was shot in front of his three young children, is now paralyzed from the waist down.
Jacob Blake, like George Floyd, Dreasjon Reed, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black people who have been shot, injured, or murdered at the hands of the police have exposed what we have known for too long: all too many police in this country are entrenched in systemic violence and racism.
Jacob did not brandish a weapon, nor make any threats towards the police. There was no reason for the use of deadly force.
We CANNOT let yet another unacceptable case of police brutality go unanswered. Jacob Blake needs our help fighting for justice. We must demand that the cops who shot Jacob are immediately arrested and charged.
