Hello,

My ancestors knew that working in the coal mines was dark and a dangerous way to make a living, but they did it -- despite the risk -- in the hopes of providing a better life for their loved ones.

On the first Labor Day, back in 1894, few protections for workers existed and their voices were often drowned out, but generations of workers organized and fought for their rights. Their blood and sweat created workplace protections for all Americans that helped build the middle class.

It's inspiring to look back on what they accomplished. And this Labor Day, as we approach one of the most important elections of our lifetimes in the midst of a pandemic, we need that inspiration.

Far too many of our neighbors and our coworkers still lack even basic benefits like paid sick leave and family leave as they work in unsafe conditions during this pandemic, and too many are subjected to workplace harassment on a regular basis. Others work every day to feed our families and their own while being subjected to hateful rhetoric by our President.

We have so much work left to do, up to and long after Election Day. We have an obligation to the women and men of organized labor and all workers. We must commit to raising wages for working and middle class Americans. We must ensure that they too benefit when our economy is strong and refuse to allow our budgets to be balanced on their backs.

This Labor Day, we must recommit to ensuring every worker has a fair shot on a level playing field.

I'll continue to do my part in the U.S. Senate, working to pass emergency legislation to make sure that working people continue to have the resources they need to feed their families during this trying time, and I'll work with Joe Biden to ensure we can "build back better."

I hope I can count on you to stand with me.

Happy Labor Day,

Bob Casey
