Across America, sewage sludge containing toxic chemicals is used on farmland. And those chemicals then seep into waterways and ecosystems.[1]

That's because toxic PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," show up in the sewage sludge marketed to farmers as fertilizer. Once that sludge is spread on crop fields, PFAS can pollute ecosystems, contaminate food and drinking water and impact human health.[2]

We have a window to stop this. Tell the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by Sept. 4: Do more to address toxic PFAS in sewage sludge fertilizer.

From raincoats to lotion to non-stick pans, PFAS turn up all over the place.[3] And when they are released from factories or leak from landfills, they often end up at wastewater treatment plants.[4]

But not only are PFAS toxic -- they're also so hard to break down they've earned the nickname "forever chemicals." Most sewage treatment plants are not currently filtering them out of wastewater.[] Instead, they get mixed with sewage sludge.[5]

That mixture is then spread on millions of acres of cropland around the country.[6]

From there, toxic PFAS can leach into local soil, pollute ecosystems and even contaminate drinking water. That's a risk to our health and environment -- and it's completely unnecessary.

Tell the EPA today to restrict the use of PFAS-laden sewage sludge.

Scientists are still learning more about the health impacts of PFAS, but things are already dire. PFAS have been linked to reproductive problems, endocrine disruption and immune system issues -- not to mention multiple types of cancer.[7]

The EPA is accepting public comments on PFAS in sewage sludge until Sept. 4 -- which means now is the time to speak up against PFAS pollution.
