John,
Despite a global ban on commercial whaling since 1986, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have kept hunting whales for profit. Together the three countries have killed more than 45,000 of these majestic, intelligent animals over the past four decades.
This cruel, unnecessary killing must end once and for all.
Aside from being extraordinary in their own right, whales are powerful allies in the fight against the climate and extinction crises. They absorb and store massive amounts of carbon throughout their long lives, and their nutrient-rich waste fuels the ocean food webs that all marine ecosystems rely on. Protecting whales will help protect the health of our oceans and our planet.
This September the International Whaling Commission will hold its 70th meeting. It’s a key moment for governments to stand up and declare that commercial whaling has no place in today’s world. They need to know how much the public cares.
Add your name to our petition calling for an end to commercial whaling.
