Happy Labor Day, friend!
For centuries, unions have fought against corruption and greed to defend the rights of working people. They secured victories like the 40-hour work-week, paid sick leave, health care coverage, safer working conditions, higher wages, and more.
We often take these advancements for granted. But now more than ever, we need to stand with our local unions.
Virginia is just one of three states in the nation with a blanket ban on collective bargaining for public-sector workers. This ban is a legacy of Jim Crow, because people in power know there is power in numbers. As the saying goes: United we bargain, divided we beg. That's why earlier this year, I called on the Virginia General Assembly to overturn that ban — and we won!
Working people have a right to organize and build power in the workplace. Please add your name this Labor Day to join me in fighting for working people.
In Virginia, teachers, firefighters, and other public-sector workers are asking for a voice — not just for themselves but also for the communities they serve.
Empowering our public sector workers has always been one of the most important pathways to the middle class. When we strengthen our public sector, we have the chance to strengthen our entire community too.
Now, if we expect our community to flourish, it's past time to give our workers the dignity of a voice and a seat at the table. Virginia public-sector workers will soon have the freedom to form a union and bargain collectively for things such as fair pay, adequate staffing, and safe working conditions.
Please join me in standing in solidarity with our workers here in the City of Richmond. They deserve a voice and it's time we start fighting for them!
Together, we can strengthen our community and continue fighting for a city that works for everyone.
Have a safe Labor Day,
Levar
