Ahead of the Plenary session next
week, MEPs and their respective political groups will spend this week
preparing for the State of the Union debate with Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen. Meanwhile, Committee meetings will focus on
topics such as the situation in Belarus, peace-keeping operations in
Libya and Mali, and a report of the ENVI Committee addressing the EU’s
climate goals.
On Monday, the EU and the UK’s
negotiating teams will kick off the 8th round of Brexit talks that
will last until Thursday. Meanwhile, the European Parliament, the
Commission and the Council will continue their negotiations on the
EU’s long-term budget this week. Towards the end of the week, the
German presidency will host an informal meeting of economic and
financial ministers. The Eurogroup will meet on Friday.

European Parliament
On Monday, the Committee on Civil
Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will vote on the framework of
ethical aspects of artificial intelligence, robotics and related
technologies. Meanwhile, the Subcommittee on Human Rights will
exchange views on the situation in Belarus following the presidential
elections of 9 August. The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will
exchange views on the EU’s peace-keeping operations in Libya and Mali.
The Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee is expected
to vote on a report addressing the EU’s climate neutrality
goals.
European Commission
On Monday, Michel Barnier and David
Frost and their respective teams will meet in London for the 8th round
of Brexit negotiations. Furthermore, Nicholas Schmit, Commissioner for
Jobs and Social Rights, will take part in the G20 meeting of labour
and employment ministers. A College meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday. On Thursday, the Commissioner for Budget and
Administration, Johannes Hahn, will receive Milena Hrdinková, State
Secretary for European Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Council of the EU
An informal meeting of economic and
finance ministers will take place in Berlin on Friday and Saturday.
Moreover, the Eurogroup will come together on Friday. Eurozone
ministers are expected to discuss the suspension of the EU’s fiscal
rules in 2021.
