Yesterday morning, part of a glacier collapsed in Nepal.

It released a wall of ice, rock and water that tore down a mountain valley
at catastrophic speed. Within 30 minutes, water levels rose 27 feet.
Entire villages vanished. Hundreds of people have been killed and many
hundreds more are missing.^1

Experts are still investigating how it actually happened but there's
already a lot of evidence that massive glaciers are destabilizing with our
warming climate and disasters like this are happening more often now due
to climate change.^2

This is the second major flood from glacier collapse in this exact region
in just 14 months. And there’s a risk that there could be second and third
waves today or tomorrow.^3

Aakriti Dotel, coordinator at Nepalese Youth for Climate Action, put it
plainly: "As our glaciers melt and extreme weather events become
increasingly unpredictable, communities living downstream are bearing the
devastating consequences. There must be stronger support for vulnerable
mountain communities, and accountability from those most responsible for
the climate crisis."

The people affected by this horrific flood need immediate help: shelter,
food, clean water and medical care. Search and rescue is just getting
started. Entire villages remain cut off, accessible only by air.

127,000 volunteers already mobilized. They've released emergency supplies
and are leading search, rescue and response efforts.

organizations to reach underserved and hard-to-access communities.

This disaster has a clear message for the world leaders heading into the
upcoming UN Climate Talks (COP31): delay is deadly. Every melting glacier
is a ticking time bomb that can go off without warning. Those least
responsible for the climate crisis pay with their lives.
