Push Back Against Trump Administration’s End to USCIS Deferred Action Policy for People Facing Serious Medical Conditions

Without any public notice or comment period, the Trump administration last week said it was no longer considering requests for deferred action for people facing serious medical conditions ([link removed]) . This policy allowed immigrants to stay in the United States for two-year periods to receive life-saving medical care otherwise unavailable to them in their home countries. The termination of the policy is a death sentence to those once protected who are receiving treatment for conditions like epilepsy, HIV, cancer, and muscular dystrophy. The termination leaves thousands of families with only about a month to leave the country, or face formal deportation. ** Another Lawsuit Filed To Block
DHS’s Public Charge Rule

Last Tuesday, Make the Road NY, African Services Committee, Asian American Federation, Catholic Charities Community Services, and CLINIC filed a joint complaint ([link removed]) opposing the Department of Homeland Security’s final rule. The NY advocates case brings the total case count up to six -- with cities, counties, states, and service providers and advocacy groups around the country filing complaints. We applaud, support, and thank all the organizations and individuals for stepping forward and bringing legal action to stop this rule from being implemented! We will keep you posted as these efforts move forward.
** New Report from Georgetown University’s
Center for Children and Families

Last week, the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute's Center for Children and Families published a report ([link removed]) on the effects of public charge on children in immigrant communities. The report thoughtfully explains the new rule, with helpful tables and charts, and specifically examines its impact on the health of immigrant children, as well as the chilling effect.
