Last weekend, Rep. Dexter and I went inside the Northwest ICE Detention Center in Tacoma after receiving numerous reports about a hunger strike and troubling conditions inside.

We left with serious concerns – about access to medical care, the quality of the food being served, and when people are actually receiving their meals. And about the fact that GEO staff lied to us about whether or not there was a hunger strike and which unit was participating.

Getting answers has been far harder than it should be. ICE leadership has put up barriers to congressional oversight — limiting our ability to access information about what is happening inside the facility.

We won’t accept that.

Members of Congress and the American people have a right to know how human beings in federal custody are being treated, and Congress has a responsibility to make sure ICE is held accountable.
