Donald Trump’s comments about our veterans and members of the military are beyond disgusting -- they are un-American.

I spent 23 years in the Navy, and then proudly served our nation’s twenty-five million veterans as Assistant Secretary. I served under Democratic and Republican presidents, and I never could have imagined a Commander-in-Chief having such complete disregard for our troops. President Trump’s words make it clear that he has no respect for those who voluntarily serve to protect our country.

The men and women in uniform, particularly those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, deserve the utmost respect and gratitude from all of us and especially from our leaders. It saddens and angers me that the President continues to belittle those who served our country -- to protect our freedom.

We won’t let these comments distract us from our mission. I look forward to continuing to fight for our veterans in the State Senate, and I look forward to the day when we, again, have a Commander-in-Chief who shares the American values of honor and gratitude for the men and women of our armed forces.
