This November, Californians will vote on a ballot measure to impose a one-time 5% tax on the state’s billionaires.

I support it. As I wrote in a recent letter to the editor [[link removed]] in the Washington Post, the people who have benefited most from California’s success have a responsibility to give back. This isn't radical—it’s patriotic.

California’s roughly 250 billionaires are worth more than $2 trillion. Even after paying this tax, they would still be worth nearly $2 trillion—while the revenue raised would help protect health care for children and families across our state.

The opposition wants us to believe billionaires will no longer innovate if they’re asked to contribute a small fraction of their fortunes to the state that helped make their success possible.

I don’t buy it.

Those who have made billions of dollars through pluck and ingenuity can afford to give back to a state that allowed them to live their dreams, while ensuring every hardworking person has the opportunity to live a decent life. Real innovators won't be stopped by strengthening their communities. That is progressive, patriotic capitalism.
