JOhn, w e’re the richest country in the history of the world. So why do we still have families and children going hungry?
The short and unbelievably frustrating answer: politics.
Last summer, Donald Trump and Republicans passed the largest cut to SNAP in history to fund tax cuts for corporations and billionaires. The consequences have been brutal. More than 4 million Americans have now lost access to food assistance they rely on, including 1.5 million children.
And it’s not just funding — the Trump administration has gutted the federal workforce in charge of administering these programs, too. Nearly 28,000 USDA employees have quit or been fired since Trump took office.
Now, the administration is forcing the relocation of key USDA offices — a move that won’t save a dime or improve a single thing. What it will do is push out experienced staff, slow down services families rely on, and make it even harder to get food assistance to the kids who need it.
This isn’t just a policy failure. It’s a moral one.
Earlier this month, I held a town hall to talk with our neighbors about this fight: what it will take to restore SNAP funding, protect the federal workers who make these programs run, and hold this administration accountable. It starts with electing a Democratic House majority that puts people ahead of profits.
