The Amazon rainforest is still burning, John, and it’s only
gotten worse.
In the past 48 hours since Brazil announced a ban on burning, roughly
2,000 new fires have broken out across the Amazon. Clearly, the problem
continues and not enough is being done to solve this environmental crisis.
The truth is that Brazil’s anti-environment president sees the
conservation of the Amazon as an impediment to economic growth, and
agricultural companies around the world are only emboldening him to let
the Amazon burn so they can use this land to make a profit.
The Amazon rainforest is called the Earth’s lungs for a reason, and it’s
irreplaceable. We’re already facing climate crisis -- we’re now entering
dangerous new territory and the worst possible impacts of climate change
if we lose this major source of oxygen.
The time to act and save the Amazon is NOW. That’s why DFA is teaming up
with MightyEarth, Amazon Watch, the National Articulation of the
Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB), and Extinction Rebellion to put
pressure on the Brazilian government and the international companies
responsible.
Here’s how you can help:
1. [ [link removed] ]Add your name to our petition calling on companies who work with
major deforester Cargill to end their partnership and demand President
Bolsonaro reinstate protections for the Amazon now.
2. [ [link removed] ]Sign up to participate in the #Sept5Act4Amazonia Global Day of
Action this Thursday, September 5th.
We need a critical mass of people across the planet to rise up and demand
the Amazon be protected before it’s too late.
Thanks for standing with us,
