Folks,
Thanks to Tommy Tuberville, Alabama’s hunger crisis is about to get worse.
You see, according to the most recent reporting, over 900,000 Alabamians, or almost 18% of Alabama’s population, face hunger. That’s over 900,000 of our friends and neighbors, and that includes over 276,000 children.
But now, thanks to Tuberville’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” Alabama is for the first time ever going to be on the hook for roughly $174 million a year just to keep SNAP, the federal government’s food assistance program, running. If we have to pay that bill, even for a single year, it would be an absolute disaster for Alabamians. Frankly, I am concerned that instead of finding a way to pay that bill, Alabama lawmakers will simply decline to participate in the program.
Alabama food bank leaders have just come together to ask our senators to secure a two-year extension, giving our state more time to meet the stringent new requirements Tuberville’s bill created and hopefully avoid this fee.
I sincerely hope Tommy Tuberville gets his act together and helps get that extension passed. But to be honest, I wouldn’t put money on it.
Tuberville has already shown us how little he cares about Alabamians struggling to put food on the table. He’s already voted to kick more than 80,000 Alabamians off of SNAP. [ [link removed] ] And instead of proposing a serious solution to this crisis, he says he wants to “fix SNAP with AI.” [ [link removed] ] What the hell does that even mean? People can’t eat AI.
I don’t want any Alabamian to go hungry. As governor, I will fight to protect SNAP, support the food banks serving our communities, and make sure Alabama families have a government that is actually fighting for them.
But to do that, we have to win this election. So I’ve got to ask for your support.
I hate fundraising, but there’s just too much on the line. If we want to stand with those in our communities who are facing hunger by protecting SNAP, stand behind our food banks, and keep Tommy Tuberville from destroying the services the most vulnerable members of our communities rely on, I need your help.
