SB276, the bill that will remove medical exemptions for vaccinations for 99% of those who currently have them passed out of the Appropriations Committee without any amendments on a 11-4-3 vote.  We are thankful for the Republicans and Asms Chau and Maienschein who did not vote for the bill.

So what now?

Sb276 now heads to the assembly floor.  We were hoping for at least some amendments coming out of appropriations, but none were required.  Senator Pan has made it clear that he feels he doesn’t need any amendments to get the 41 votes to get the bill passed by the Assembly.  If SB276 is not amended it could go to the Assembly for a floor vote tomorrow through next Wednesday.  If it is amended then the amendments need to be in print by next Tuesday. It can be brought for a vote within 72 hours of being amended.  If it passes the Assembly it then goes back to the Senate for a concurrence vote and then to the Governor for his signature or to be vetoed.

Visit Your Assembly member’s district office – even if you already have many times

Visit your Assembly member’s district office this week, multiple times if you can.  Drop off different pieces of xxxxxxrmation.  Share your concerns about the bill.  I have attached different documents that you can use for this purpose.  Many, many assembly members have heard and understand the concerns.  However, when they go to Senator Pan with them, he sends a group form CMA to talk to them and waylay all the concerns as if they are not real.  The assembly members are then “happy” with the bill.  You have to keep up the relationships with those staffers and legislators that you have, and have them understand that the bill does not address these concerns, even if Senator Pan and the CMA says it does.

Issues with the bill can be found here:

https://avoiceforchoiceadvocacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/AVFCA-SB276-7-1-19-KEY-amendment-requests.pdf

If there is one concern/amendment to focus on it is the amendment to expand the medical criteria.  If we can get this wording in the bill it will at least allow for doctors to use the latest research and children to be safe from being injured due to family history and genetics and would allow doctors to use the latest research…

Remove reference to the non-existent CDC, ACIP and AAP criteria for medical exemptions and replace all references to the criteria with “CDC Contraindications and Precautions, xxxxxxrmation from the CDC Vaccine xxxxxxrmation Statements, adverse reactions from the manufacturer vaccine package insert, the HRSA National Vaccine Injury table xxxxxxrmation, family medical history, genetics and other documentation supported by relevant research.”

Governor Newsom on SB276

In June, Governor Newsom said he had issues with SB276 which cause a flurry of activity, resulting in significant amendments to the bill, which seemed to waylay his concerns.  However, last week he stated that while he is inclined to sign the bill he still has concerns. You can view his statement here:  https://vimeo.com/351021781/recommended.  This gives us hope that either the medical exemption will be robust in SB276 or he will veto the bill.

Let the Governor know your thoughts on the bill: https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/

And thanks to Josh Coleman for an AMAZING peaceful protest last week (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10219497131156912) and also for turning this idea of ours around in 24 hours and making it a reality…A peaceful stand of 2-3 people outside the Governor’s office requesting him to meet with us  (mirroring our Warriors in White stand after SB277 but this time before and in front of the Governor’s office).  If you want to take a shift, please contact Olivia Mikos on FB – don’t just show up.  Thanks!

Tweet to Assembly members and Governor Newsom multiple times a day.  Respond to tweets and retweet

We need you to get active on Twitter – really active.  If you don’t have an account, please go to twitter and set one up (you don’t have to use your own name).  Once you have created an account or if you already have an account, go to https://twitter.com/avoiceforchoice and click on “Follow” and then click on the bell next to that to get notifications from us.  We tweet a meme a day on the policy of SB276 directed at legislators.  We need YOU to retweet the 4-5 tweets of these daily to the 80 legislators.  Please find our tweets by searching on twitter for @Avoiceforchoice and #SB276 and retweet them.  To remember, we suggest you set an alarm to check twitter daily and retweet.  When tweeting about SB276, please be sure to use “NO ON #SB276” as that will allow other people to search and find your tweets.

Also if you have not already, please retweet the following:

Donate to A Voice for Choice Advocacy (http://avoiceforchoiceadvocacy.org/donate/)

Thank you to all those who have generously donated!!  Our 3 seasoned lobbyists and working hard for us and are making a real difference in their conversations with assembly members, and allowed some of our questions and concerns to be raised in the committee hearing, making Senator Pan defend his bill.  We need donations to cover them for the next month but they will likely be needed beyond that, so if you have not donated, or want to donate again, please do so.  We have also subsidized all the busses from SoCal for the hearings and rallies.  If SB276 does pass, we know that what we have done this year will allow us to go into the Capital next year and have conversations to get a “clean-up” bill brought forward.  Every penny counts so ask your friends and family to donate.  Thank you!

WE ARE STRONG AND WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE BUT WE HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING FOR OUR MEDICAL RIGHTS!

THANK YOU!!
