Thanks to qualified immunity the police officers who shot and killed Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many others to name may never face legal consequences.

No one is above the law.

This summer, people of all ages and backgrounds have taken to the streets demanding justice and equality for Black Americans. We have a lot of work to do as a country, but there is one concrete step Congress could take right now to mend an unjust system: end qualified immunity.

Qualified immunity severely limits civilians’ right to hold law enforcement officers and other government officials accountable for using excessive force or violating their constitutional rights.

We need to ensure that victims of federal, state, or local government abuses of power can seek justice through civil litigation by reining in the doctrine of qualified immunity to increase accountability. It’s not a fair or sustainable system, and Congress can’t sit on its hands as Americans across the country demand justice. It’s time to hold everyone equally accountable under the law.
