Dr. Oz forced to publicly rebuke Trump's bonkers claim that MMR vaccine could be "quite lethal"
Donald Trump turned decades of established scientific consensus on its head two weeks ago when he claimed — without evidence, of course — that the MMR vaccine, first introduced in 1971, was "quite lethal" in some situations.

To be clear, the claim is complete and total bullshit. During an appearance on "Face the Nation" yesterday, Dr. Oz was boxed into a corner and forced to admit as much after repeatedly trying to dodge the question. Will the snake oil salesman still have a job in the Trump administration by week's end for daring to cross Donald? We shall soon see.

The knives are officially out as disgraced former congressman-turned teevee talker Matt Gaetz publicly tried to derail Scott Jennings' quest to become America's Next Top Smug Liar (aka White House press secretary).

Gaetz brought receipts to the cat fight, sharing op-eds, posts, and comments made by Jennings from 2021 roundly criticizing Donald Trump for inciting the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. This appears to be in revenge for Jennings publicly mocking the idea of Gaetz's candidacy for attorney general.

But Donalds knows facts can't hold a candle to fear when it comes to motivating MAGA voters to show up in November, so here we are. Nothing like a huge pile of steaming xenophobia to kick off a summer Sunday morning.

GOP Senate candidate, campaigning as truck-driving everyman, travels by private jet
After winning his North Carolina primary, Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley wasted no time flooding the airwaves with a general election ad hyping his flannel-shirt-wearing, pickup-truck-driving, everyman bona fides. In the ad, Whatley climbs into the driver's seat of a GMC truck as a folksy narrator chimes in: "Whatley’s driven thousands of miles across North Carolina trying to fix our country and help working families."

In truth, Whatley has spent more than $100,000 shuttling across the state in a private jet belonging to a felon convicted of defrauding the federal government.

Look, we're not saying Whatley hasn't spent time behind the wheel on the campaign trail. It's just that a lot of those miles have been to and from the private airfield where an ex-convict pal's swanky jet has been waiting for him.

Hakeem Jeffries meeting with Jared Kushner sparks backlash amongst Democrats ahead of midterm elections
In "normal" times, meeting with a close ally of a sitting president from the opposing party might make good sense, politically and pragmatically speaking. But these are not normal times, and there's very little common ground or room for compromise when the person sitting across the table is a card-carrying member of Team Burn Democracy to the Ground.

That House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries thought a meeting with Jared Kushner, of all people, would somehow be acceptable to his base 10 weeks before the midterms is more than a little troubling and raises all kinds of questions about exactly how he'll lead the party if and when Democrats retake the House in November.

Former Obama aide and current co-host of of the "Pod Save America" podcast Tommy Vietor rightly noted, "Jared Kushner has no actual government job. He just uses his family connections to get money from Gulf autocrats and fund corrupt deals. The only way [Jeffries] should work with him is with demands for documents and subpoenas." Hear, hear.

Union of Concerned Scientists: Since the start of Trump's second term, the Union of Concerned Scientists has documented over 500 attacks on science. Many of these attacks are major scientific integrity violations, including political interference in studies, censoring federal scientists from speaking publicly, disbanding advisory committees of experts, and restricting access to key public health data. There is far too much at stake to let these attacks continue. Will you sign the petition and join UCS in urging Congress to pass the bipartisan Scientific Integrity Act to help stop these attacks?

Wall Street Journal scorches Trump for re-upping "dumbest trade war" with Canada
The editorial board of Rupert Murdoch's The Wall Street Journal publicly trashed Donald Trump on Sunday for resurrecting his petty, reductive trade war with Canada, saying the move "makes no economic or political sense." To be fair, very little of what the MAGA cult leader does makes much economic or political sense, so...points for being consistent?

In a piece entitled, "The Dumbest Trade War Revisited," the WSJ board wrote: "President Trump took exception last year when we called his tariffs against Canada and Mexico the dumbest trade war in history. It got dumber this weekend as Mr. Trump escalated with another round of border taxes on Canadian imports, a mere 10 weeks before midterm elections."

USS Abraham Lincoln sailor’s anguish after father detained by Border Patrol while he serves in Middle East
One thing is certain in the deplorable age of Trump: the grifter's xenophobic goons will never miss an opportunity to exact maximum cruelty, no matter the circumstances.

On Saturday, Navy sailor Joshua Aviles — who has been at sea for more than NINE months about the beleaguered USS Abraham Lincoln — learned that his father had been detained by ICE in Florida and is now facing imminent deportation. Aviles' explained on Facebook: "I've been deployed for over nine months, out at sea in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, fighting for a country that has given me everything... I just got a call that my dad was taken by ICE." Aviles noted that his Nicaraguan-born father possessed a driver's license, Social Security card, and employment authorization, adding, "We have done everything through immigration to get his green card approved, and we are just waiting. This is heartbreaking for me. I don't know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly being treated like a criminal."

The Department of Homeland Security had a slightly different take on the matter, writing: "Having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation's laws."

The cruelty IS the point.
