A Labor Day Weekend message from the Prospect

The pandemic has exposed the stratospheric levels of economic inequality in this country, and it shows no signs of letting up. As Emily Peck reported Thursday in HuffPost, employment rates for low-wage workers are down 16% from where they were before the pandemic, while the rate for those earning more than $60,000 a year, the top quarter of earners, is down only 0.5%. That is dramatic.

Back in April, the Prospect asked seven labor historians, journalists, and strategists to share their thoughts on how workers will fare in the months and years ahead, and their proposals for what workers’ movements should be doing for the millions who’ve won the nation’s admiration and sympathy but still lack the power to significantly improve their lot.
