The 2020 Census has faced enormous hurdles.

The initial headcount was sorely disrupted by Donald Trump’s failed attempt to include a citizenship question on the form. Then, the Census Bureau faced the nearly impossible task of organizing communities to complete the census during a global pandemic and economic crisis.

Now, Donald Trump and his Administration have decided to end its count one month early. This move is undemocratic and will have devastating effects on communities across the country, especially in Nevada.

Trump’s decision to end the count early has left the agency only weeks to contact hard-to-reach rural communities, as well as communities of color who have been disproportionately underrepresented in previous counts.

For every person who is not counted in Nevada, we lose an estimated $20,000 to support critical services like Medicaid, Medicare and education.

In addition, an undercount in the Census has lasting consequences -- the Census count informs funding decisions for the next decade, and it’s a critical indicator for whether communities will grow or improve quality of life.

Millions of people will miss their opportunity to be counted if Trump ends the Census count early, and we can’t let this happen without speaking up.
