Congressman Mike Garcia filed bipartisan legislation along with Democrat colleague from Texas and chair of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. The “Supporting Early Career Researchers Act” is a bill that would create a fellowship program at the National Science Foundation for postdoctoral researchers who are unable to continue their research at universities due to COVID-19. Rep. Mike Garcia had the following to say upon filing this vital legislation:

"During these unusual times, it is critically important that we ensure that all efforts and avenues are being made available to the next generation of ground-breaking researchers so that we do not fall drastically behind other foreign powers. Countries, such as Communist China, are threatening to outpace the United States in the fields of science and technology. Now, more than ever, Congress must ensure that innovation gained through these important areas of research is not forfeited for years to come."

On August 11, 2020, Congressman Mike Garcia had the opportunity to meet with members of the California National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station. This is in addition to the earlier meetings the Congressman has had with the U.S. Forest Service, LA County Fire Department, and CALFIRE. The 146th Airlift Wing is home to Southern California’s Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS), an essential firefighting resource for California’s 25th District. Congressman Garcia was welcomed to Channel Island ANGS by Brigadier General Greg Jones, Colonel William Green, Colonel Chris Dougherty, and their support staff.

"As the 25th District enters the heart of the envelope of fire season, it was an honor to visit and receive a briefing from the C-130 firefighting squadron of the 146th Airlift Wing at Channel Island ANGS,” said Congressman Mike Garcia. “Channel Island ANGS is a significant employer of residents of the 25th Congressional District. These service members are heroes to all of California in our fight against fires."

Congressman Mike Garcia’s visit to the 146th Airlift Wing came less than 24 hours before the outbreak of the Lake Fire in California’s 25th District. Rapidly spreading throughout 10,500 acres, the Lake Fire was combated by multiple large aerial tankers, such as the ones found at Channel Island.

Congressman Mike Garcia presented the first half of his second personal monthly salary donation to the Antelope Valley Veterans Community Action Coalition, a Palmdale nonprofit that supports local veterans by providing them with the resources they need, primarily health care and financial assistance, and connecting them to various federal, state and local veteran’s programs.

Garcia will be delivering the second half of his August donation this week to the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Boosters, who he will be meeting with for a tour of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

Garcia will be contributing to another non-profit directly serving the 25th district next month as well, fulfilling a commitment to donate ([link removed]) the equivalent of 10% of his monthly salary to local organizations as the district continues to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic.
