Hola hola Friend,

with school starting and the weather cooling down, we are already saying goodbye to our beloved summer. August is always a slow month, but not for us. We had a bunch of activities that kept us all busy. Read more about them here:

Puerto Rico

We released a report from Hedge Clippers called Pain and Profit, in which we name the top 4 hedge fund companies who own the majority of the bonds that have Puerto Rico in debt. At the same time we released a letter asking democratic  presidential candidates to return the money they received from hedge fund companies willing to keep the island in debt. We held a powerful action outside of one of the biggest bondholder of Puerto Rico debt "Goldentree Asset Management", and got Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren to return their donations.

Long Island

Long Island's education leaders rallied this month calling on Governor Cuomo to sign into bills passed by the State Senate and Assembly bring urgently needed reforms to the troubled school district. NYCC members also organized their quarterly tenant townhall at the Hempstead Public Library for a training on the new rent laws and to plan the campaign to expand basic protections to tenants in unregulated units. We also welcomed Planned Parenthood of Nassau County to discuss the programs available to the community in the Village of Hempstead. And to officially close summer the Long Island Chapter organized its annual Harvest Day at the NYCC Hempstead Community Garden. This year's harvest included okra, tomatoes, eggplant, watermelon, cucumbers, turnips, green peppers, collard greens, corn, onions, and kale!

Climate

In May, the Cuomo's administration rejected the proposed Williams fracked gas pipeline. Williams Company quickly reapplied and their permit application is now pending approval or denial by the State. In August, we turned up the heat against the pipeline and carried out two strong actions: On August 7, we rallied with nearly 200 people outside of Gov. Cuomo's midtown Manhattan office, urging him to stop the Williams pipeline for good. Just one week later, we rallied with more than 50 people out front of Senator Todd Kaminsky's office in Long Island, urging him to publicly oppose the pipeline.

Meanwhile, we’ve been pushing back against the false choice that National Grid has been feeding to its customers: more gas or grandma freezes. We’ll continue to push the utility, and ultimately Governor Cuomo, to scale up renewable alternatives for energy consumers in the region as we transition NY to a livable future.

English Classes

The NYCC Workforce ESL Program is gearing up for the opening of the 2019/2020 school year. Recruitment and Registration season has begun – with registration sessions scheduled at all the sites during the evenings in September. Classes will start back up again the first week of October at our sites in Flatbush and Sunset Park in Brooklyn, and at our 3 sites in the Bronx.

Each of our classes meet twice a week from 7 to 10 pm: if you know of adults (who are over 21) who would be interested in English classes, please have them call (347) 410-6919 x242.
