John,
Workers are the backbone of our economy. They keep the wheels turning, despite the many challenges facing our nation in these historically difficult times.
From grocery clerks, educators, and utility workers to delivery drivers, postal workers, health care heroes, and so many more, working families are keeping our communities running. Alongside those heroes, organizing and ever-vigilant in fighting for the good jobs, respect, and fair treatment that all workers deserve -- has been America’s labor movement.
And that movement has never been more important than it is today -- with millions out of work through no fault of their own, and millions more facing cutbacks and safety concerns on the job.
In better times, it’s easy to take what generations of working families have fought so hard to win and build for America’s middle class -- like the right to form a union, the 40-hour work week, the weekend, the minimum wage, Social Security, and Medicare. Today is not just a day to celebrate those accomplishments, but to recommit ourselves to protecting so many hard fought gains and building back even better than before.
That’s what we can do in this campaign. It’s why I’m so proud to have folks like the California Labor Federation AFL-CIO, the Sacramento Sierra’s Building Trades Council, the California Teachers Association, and so many others standing with us.
Together we will fight to build a future that recognizes and values all working families -- and secures the brighter future we all deserve.
Thank you, and happy Labor Day.
