What does justice taste like?
Well, we're teaming up with Ben & Jerry's to find out. Today, one day before the Miami-Dade County School Board is expected to address the "school to prison pipeline," we are making a big announcement that will spark conversations, spotlight structural racism in a broken criminal justice system, and taste really yummy!
Although systemic racism and criminal justice reform are tough issues for businesses to take on, Ben & Jerry's has been an advocate for social justice and equity for much of its 40 years.
It's important to invest in services that build up communities rather than those that tear them down, which means investing in children's mental health and wellness rather than creating a 'school-to-prison' pipeline with more cops on campus. And it means demanding morally consistent policing so the same rules apply, regardless of the color of your skin."
At the local level, Ben & Jerry's worked with Advancement Project National Office partner, Miami's Power U Center for Social Change, in calling on the Miami-Dade County School Board to prioritize funding for mental health and counselors instead of more school police officers.
We're excited about collaborative efforts to combat school policing. In addition to the announcement to come, Advancement Project recently launched a microsite, which tracks and details all documented police violence against students of color since 2009. Visit the microsite and find out how you can take action in support of #PoliceFreeSchools.
