Donald Trump fired every remaining commissioner of the federal agency that helps states run secure elections.

By email. Effective immediately. Just months before the midterms.

Days earlier, his Justice Department announced it was deploying election monitors to battleground states and Democratic strongholds — and threatened election officials in all 50 states with criminal prosecution.

Fired the referees. Sent in his own watchers. Threatened the people who count the votes.

I spent years as a federal prosecutor. I know a pattern of intent when I see one. This isn't election security — it's an attempt to seize control of our elections before a single ballot is cast.

There is one check on his abuse of power that Trump cannot fire and cannot intimidate: a Democratic Senate.
