We know the stakes: If built, Pebble Mine will irreparably damage Bristol Bay’s environment and devastate local Indigenous communities -- like mine -- that have relied on this area for thousands of years. It will fill the waters with more than 10 billion tons of toxic waste, and pollute over 5,000 acres of pristine Alaskan habitat. It could also decimate one of the last remaining healthy wild salmon populations in the world.

More than 65 percent of Alaskans, and 80 percent of Bristol Bay residents -- including Native people -- stand united in opposing the mine. The only ones who would benefit are Pebble Limited Partnership and their affiliates.
Together, and with the support of Friends of the Earth members like you, we have stood up to the powerful advocates for the mine, and prevented this project from going forward -- so far.
Now, the Army Corps of Engineers has given us a reprieve by rejecting the mining company’s permit! But the EPA may be the final decision-makers -- they could still approve this project. It’s up to us to make sure that never happens.
Here’s how it happened: Last Monday, The Army Corps of Engineers found that the mine would likely result in “significant degradation of the environment.” In its letter to Pebble Partnership, the company backing this mine, it said that the project would have “unavoidable adverse impacts” on marine life. It even went as far as to say that the project would violate the Clean Water Act. On August 24th, The USACE officially rejected the permit for Pebble Mine. But they left the door open for the project to be pushed through.
This is a partial -- but important -- victory for communities near Bristol Bay, the salmon fisheries, our environment, and our climate. It sends a message loud and clear to corporate polluters that they cannot destroy our pristine wild places.
And you helped make it happen, John. Friends of the Earth members like you sent tens of thousands of comments to the Army Corps, successfully persuading it to reject the mine. Your voice was heard! But we can’t take these decisions for granted. If we want to stop this project for good, we need to pressure the EPA to put the final nail in the coffin on this project, and veto Pebble Mine permanently.
