I want to tell you about a conversation that has stuck with me.

I was talking with a man, a good North Dakotan, hardworking and decent. When I told him I was running for Congress, he looked at me and said, more or less, why bother. They are all the same. Nothing ever changes. Nobody in Washington is listening anyway.

I have heard some version of that more times than I can count. And I understand it. People have been let down so many times that giving up starts to feel like the sensible thing to do.

But here is what I told him, and what I believe with everything I have.

That feeling, that nothing will ever change, is exactly what the powerful are counting on. As long as regular people stay home and stay quiet, the folks with the lobbyists and the million-dollar checks win by default.

The only thing that has ever beaten them is ordinary people deciding they are done being ignored, and showing up anyway.

I am a Marine. I do not quit on a fight because it looks hard. I came home to North Dakota because I love this place and the people in it, and I am running because they deserve someone who will stand up for them, not someone who has already decided the outcome and stopped trying.
