Hi there Friend,

As a former public high school teacher, September means a lot to me. It was always an exciting time in the classroom as students were getting into the swing of being back in school after summer vacation. I also always knew September was my chance to set us on a path to a successful school year where I hoped to make a difference in my students’ lives. Now, as a staff member at The Trevor Project, I’m still working on behalf of students, but September has new meaning.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. As I reflect on my time teaching, I’m reminded of just how many young people are affected by suicide.

Did you know suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–19 in the U.S.? Even with that staggering statistic, only 2 states have comprehensive suicide prevention policy laws that address the unique needs for LGBTQ youth in public schools — Nevada and California.

That’s why The Trevor Project is helping schools this September, and how we can protect more youth and students from suicide ([link removed]) . We’re promoting an LGBTQ-inclusive Model District School Policy on Suicide Prevention that equips school districts to prevent, and respond to youth suicidal behavior, ensuring teachers and school staff, like I was, have the tools and support they need.

By having clear suicide prevention policies and procedures in place, schools can act to reduce the risk of suicide and to prevent suicide contagion — ultimately saving more young lives.

Will you join us today in supporting schools across the U.S. to implement suicide prevention policies? This National Suicide Prevention Awareness month, sign on to show your support for protecting young people. ([link removed])

As early as 5 years old, I was telling people I wanted to be a teacher. I pivoted my career towards advocacy so I could bring a teacher’s perspective into the rooms where decisions are made to help protect students for years to come. I hope I can count on you tosign on in support of this Model School Suicide Prevention Policy and help us support more youth ([link removed]) .

You can be part of the solution and help get us closer to a world where youth suicide is a thing of the past.

Thank you for everything you do,
