John, Jacob Blake was shot in the back seven times while his three children looked helplessly on. Now paralyzed from the waist down, this is how elected officials in Wisconsin responded:

This isn't the first time we've witnessed lawmakers duck and dive solutions that will prevent violence. In 2019, following the Virginia Beach Massacre, lawmakers gaveled their special session in and out in 90 seconds with no debate or votes.

But we learned a thing or two in Virginia when lawmakers ignored the will of the people.

Brady refused to accept this lack of action. We mobilized supporters, endorsed gun safety champions, and for the first time in TWO decades, we flipped the Virginia General Assembly to a gun violence prevention majority. Virginia is now home to some of the strongest gun laws in the country.

It's time to do the same in Wisconsin — and it starts with your voice, John. We must hold lawmakers in Wisconsin accountable for refusing to enact life-saving reforms.

Add your name to Brady’s petition holding Wisconsin lawmakers accountable. We must reach 4,000 signatures by tonight to ensure lawmakers hear us loud and clear!

Sarah Brady once said, "If you can’t change the laws, then change the lawmakers." We did it in Virginia. Wisconsin voters, all eyes are on you this November.

Microstamping Legislation Heads to Gov. Newsom's Desk!

Last week, the State Senate passed our priority microstamping bill, AB 2847, now on its way to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk for signature! We're mere steps away from making microstamping technology a reality in California.

Brady California chapter members, like Amanda Wilcox, Mattie Scott, and Shikha Hamilton, have been fighting to make microstamping a reality for more than 15 years in California. While microstamping new-model handguns has been the law of the land for more than 10 years, the gun industry has circumvented it every step of the way and prevented its implementation. Why?

Because they refuse to implement reforms that will save lives, even when the cost to them is incredibly low. The truth is that microstamping technology is a common-sense tool to prevent gun violence as microstamped marks on bullet casings will help identify shooters before they do more harm.

You see what we're up against, John? That boycotting by the gun industry ends today. With this life-saving legislation headed to the Governor’s desk, we will make microstamping the new normal. Read more about our microstamping bill and other legislative victories!

ICYMI: Watch Our Virtual Event — the Tale of Two Americas: Eyes on Kenosha

The events unfolding in Kenosha, WI, are drawing national attention. We are living in two Americas — one where intimidation by armed, white vigilantes is glorified, and where protestors decrying police violence are vilified. While the other is where Black lives matter and police violence is gun violence. We gathered experts from Washington, D.C., to Wisconsin to discuss the police shooting of Jacob Blake, gun violence, NRA influence in Wisconsin, and more.

Advocate for Voting Reforms as a Brady Democracy Organizer!

Communities that face the most barriers to the ballot box are frequently those most impacted by gun violence. That's why our #VotingAccessSavesLives campaign has been mobilizing organizers to enact voting reforms ahead of Election Day, so ALL communities have their voices heard.

In Virginia alone, our calls for voting reforms helped the House pass a bill that will allocate $2 million to provide prepaid postage for the return of absentee ballots. This work was made possible by our Brady Democracy Organizers, and we're looking for more to join the fight!

As a Democracy Organizer, you’ll receive training and assistance on how to activate your own team of volunteers. Your mission: use the resources available to you through Brady and March for Our Lives and help your volunteers eliminate the barriers to accessible voting. Have 5-7 hours a week? Take your activism to the next level and advocate as a Brady Democracy Organizer!

Brady Donor of the Week: Tom S, Washington State

Tom, 75 years young, started supporting Brady in 2015. Like many Brady supporters, Tom hopes Brady's work to end gun violence will be successful and common-sense gun laws will be passed. He realizes the gun violence prevention movement is an uphill, but important and critical battle. It frustrates him that the lawmakers who accepted donations from the NRA feel obliged to follow their agenda.

When asked about gun safety training, Tom said “When I was in the Navy reserves, I had to train regularly on how to use firearms. I’ve got no problem with people owning guns, but extensive safety training should be required." Among his hobbies, Tom is a numismatist; he collects coins and paper money from all over the world!

Firearm Microstamping Bill Passes Senate, Awaits Governor’s Signature, California GlobeHolding Negligent Gun Dealers Accountable

Right now in America, 89% of all gun homicides occur in urban communities, and most often it’s communities of color most disproportionately impacted by gun violence. While uninterrupted cycles of violence contribute to this senseless bloodshed, it is made worse by easy access to firearms sold by irresponsible gun dealers and their employees.

We know that these guns do not just simply appear in impacted communities — they begin as legal firearms, sold by licensed gun dealers, that are funneled into the illegal market. Reckless dealers line their pockets while our communities suffer.

That's why the legislation introduced by gun violence prevention champion Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is so important. The Firearms Retailer Code of Conduct Act establishes common-sense requirements for gun dealers and their employees to stop the diversion of firearms into the illegal market. Communities are calling out for solutions, and this legislation will finally hold negligent dealers accountable for fueling the illegal market. Urge your representative to cosponsor this bill!

TAKE ACTION NOW >>> “Despite an unprecedented global pandemic that has affected every facet of daily life and government, the California State Legislature remained focused on preventing gun violence this year. Brady is grateful to the legislature and to Gov. Newsom for maintaining funding for CALVIP, which will fund needed and evidence-based violence interruption programs across the state. We call on the Governor to act with this same prudent foresight and sign these bills that will prevent gun violence in all of its forms and help to improve policing in California.”
