The Turkish Takeover of Syrian Land

Ever since Recep Tayyip Erdogan rose to his Presidency in March, 2003, he has treated Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu with profound political hostility. Erdogan has labelled the Israeli Prime Minister “a Hitler”, “ a Nazi” , and has called Netanyahu, “the butcher of Gaza.” He has also accused the Israeli Premier of “genocide.”
On August 18^th, Israel attacked the runway and the storage facilities at Abu al-Duhur air base, near Idlib, approximately 70 miles from the Turkish border.
Turkey has established a military presence within Syria, since August of 2016, constituting a proto state within Syria. The Syrian President Ahmed al -Sharaa, (also known by his former nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani), has unwavering respect for President Erdogan. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also continuously praised both Ahmed al-Sharaa and the terrorist organization, Hamas. He has continuously refused to condemn the group, remaining as one of Hamas’ most constant defenders, maintaining close political ties with its leadership. On Monday, August 17^th, Erdogan praised Hamas in an interview with Al Jazeera saying the terrorist group has demonstrated “genuine cooperation” and “has fulfilled its obligations with the Gaza Peace Plan.” Hamas has not handed over its weapons.

About our Speaker:
Sinan has over two decades of research experience focused on Turkish domestic politics and foreign policy, with bylines in Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, Politico, Newsweek, The National Interest, and 19FortyFive. He frequently provides commentary on various media outlets, including BBC, CNN International, DW News, France 24, the Greek Current Podcast, and CBS’s John Batchelor Show.
Sinan is also an associate professor of national security studies at Marine Corps University and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
Sinan is the author of Kemalism in Turkish Politics: The Republican People’s Party: Secularism and Nationalism (Routledge, January 2009), a book that explains the electoral weakness of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party.
He obtained his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 2007 in the field of political science.
