Primates are not pets!
Hello John,
Did you know monkeys can legally be kept as pets in the UK? And that you can walk into many pet shops and BUY a monkey, without needing a licence?
Well sadly, both are true! It's hard to believe I know. You would think the UK would have better laws around keeping wild animals in people's homes, especially complex and social animals like primates.
Often they are kept in bird cages or garden sheds. Can you imagine the suffering of a wild monkey, living in a cramped bird cage?
That is why at Freedom for Animals we have been campaigning to BAN this cruel trade.
And right now, there seems to be some interest in the idea from two major political parties!
After Labour stated they would ban primates as pets in their latest manifesto, in response the Government's Animal Welfare Minister stated he had instructed DEFRA to carry out a review on how to bring in a ban.

But will these words turn to action?
You can help make it happen!
ACTION 1:
Tweet the Animal Welfare Minister, Zac Goldsmith, asking that the Government BAN the primate pet trade! @ZacGoldsmith
Example tweet:
@ZacGoldsmith Primates suffer immensely when kept as pets in people's homes - only a ban on this trade will protect them! DEFRA needs to take action now #ProtectPrimates @freeanimalsuk
ACTION 2: Email [email protected]
Example email:
Dear Mr Goldsmith
I was pleased to hear that you had recently instructed DEFRA to investigate the possibility of banning primates as pets. As you stated, monkeys and other primates suffer immensely in the pet trade and there are many in need of rescue right now. I would fully support such a ban, as I believe that it is cruel to keep such complex, intelligent animals in a domestic situation.
I urge and you the Government to work as swiftly as is possible to bring in a ban on the primate pet trade, to protect these incredible animals.
Kind regards,
Name
15 European countries have already introduced bans on keeping primates as pets, for either all or some species. Let's use this glimmer of hope to fight for a ban here too, and free primates from cruel captivity.

P.S. Monkeys and other primates suffer when kept locked in a bird cage or garden shed. They should be living wild and free! Please take action today to push for a ban on the cruel pet trade. Thank you!
