Back in the day at Palla Elementary School in Bakersfield (Go Bulldogs!)

I grew up in Bakersfield, the son of Mexican immigrants. My dad opened an auto shop here in 2006. My mom was a homemaker. We didn't have much — I shared a bunk bed in the living room with my brothers. On weekends, I worked at the swap meet and helped out at the shop.

Nobody in my family had ever gone to college. I was the first.

I watched my parents work themselves to the bone in a Valley that wasn’t built for families like ours. I watched my older brother navigate life as a DACA recipient, always one policy change away from losing everything. I proudly saw my younger brother put on a uniform to serve our country as a Marine.

The Central Valley made me who I am. And for a long time, I thought the best way I could give back was to teach. So I became a professor at College of the Sequoias and a school board trustee -- making sure kids in this Valley had more doors open to them than I did.

But something kept nagging at me.

CA-22 has been represented by David Valadao for years. He looked Central Valley families in the eye and promised us he would never cut Medicaid — which is a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of our neighbors. Then he voted for Trump's budget and did exactly that.

I was at those rallies with the nurses, farmworkers, and ordinary working families who couldn't believe their representative had sold them out. And I kept thinking: someone has to run against him. Someone who actually knows what it means to need Medicaid. Someone who grew up and built a life here.

So I got in. Not because I wanted to be something, but because I wanted to do something -- for the families who can't afford to see a doctor, for the parents who can't afford rent, for the kids growing up in a Valley with dirty air, broken promises and no one in Washington fighting for them.
