Trump Admin Investigates MPS Over Race-Based Discipline Practices

This week, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened a Title VI investigation into Milwaukee Public Schools over allegations that its policies require or encourage school officials to consider student race when making disciplinary decisions.

In their announcement, the Department of Education stated, “In line with this new guidance, the OCR today opened two Title VI investigations into school districts that allegedly require personnel to consider race when making disciplinary decisions . . .

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, education leaders derided facially neutral school policies as reflecting systemic 'whiteness,' seemingly encouraging school officials to consider race in disciplinary practices.”

WILL has sounded the alarm on race-based approaches to school discipline for years, beginning with the Obama Administration as well as with the Biden Administration.

WILL Deputy Counsel, Cory Brewer, stated, “This investigation will hopefully uncover the racially discriminatory school discipline policies at MPS. WILL has spent years calling for reform and a break from the Obama and Biden administrations’ emphasis on racial balancing. Today is a very positive step toward true equality and safe classrooms.”

Analysis: Cut Red Tape to Solve Wisconsin's Childcare Crisis

A recent WILL analysis breaks down how excessive state regulations are squeezing Wisconsin childcare providers and pricing out working parents.

With Wisconsin ranking 43rd in the country for childcare freedom, local providers face an uphill battle against strict caps on room sizes and steep training hurdles that do little to improve care. Recent pilot programs authorized by the state’s biennial budget offer temporary relief by allowing home-based providers to care for more kids, lowering hiring ages, and increasing child-to-staff ratios—but these new rules will expire in 2027.

To actually lower costs, WILL is urging lawmakers to cut back on burdensome regulations, ease staffing restrictions, and make recent temporary relief measures permanent.

WILL’s analysis shows that if state leaders want to make childcare affordable, they need to focus on fixing the supply shortage by getting out of the way of providers.
