State lawmakers have been battling DHS while defending their constituents through a bill that would focus on immigrant rights. On July 29th, Minnesota’s Omar Fateh, Colorado's Mike Weissman, Illinois' Graciela Guzman, Maryland’s Ashanti Martinez, and Utah's Luz Escamilla all attended the ICE Accountability conference hosted by the State Innovation Exchange. State Innovation Exchange executive director EJ Juarez, emphasized that “no federal immigration agent has ever been convicted of criminal wrongdoing nor held personally liable while on duty.”

Sen. Fateh represents the southern Minneapolis district in which Renée Good and Alex Pretti were killed by ICE agents. He co-authored a bill stating federal agents should not be able to detain immigrants in courthouses, hospitals, and daycares, or wear masks to conceal their identity. The bill failed due to Republican leadership disregarding the significance of this bill to immigrant communities in Minnesota.

While multiple criminal complaints have been charged against ICE agents using excessive force on immigrants during enforcement actions in Minnesota, none of these complaints has ever amounted to conviction. Almost 8 months later, the agent who killed Renée Good has not been charged with any criminal complaint. ICE agents need to be held accountable, and Republican leaders need to stop allowing DHS and the Trump administration to continue this unprecedented war on immigrants.

Join Immigrants’ List to demand ICE agents be held accountable for their aggressive and inhumane tactics.
