New on Substack: CEC Rolls Over Affordability With Yet Another Unattainable Mandate

In a post recently published on his Substack [[link removed]], California Business Roundtable President Rob Lapsley, opined on the California Energy Commission's recently passed tire regulations:

California’s affordability crisis wasn’t created by one tax, one regulation, or one mandate. It was built one cost at a time.

Higher electricity bills. Higher gasoline prices. Higher insurance premiums. More expensive housing. Higher vehicle costs. More fees, and regulations embedded in nearly everything Californians buy. All hidden taxes Californians pay every day and at every turn.

Each new cost may look “manageable” when a state agency examines it in isolation. But California families don’t get to pay them in isolation. They pay them all.

In its latest contribution to California’s cost-of-living crisis, the California Energy Commission unanimously approved the nation’s first mandatory replacement tire efficiency standards. Under the guise of energy efficiency, unelected regulators are once again imposing a top-down mandate that will restrict consumer choices and increase the upfront cost of an essential product millions of Californians need to get to work, take their kids to school, and simply live their lives.

Only in California could regulators look at some of the highest costs of owning and operating a vehicle in America and conclude that what drivers really need is another mandate on their tires.
