The good news for many in the Okanagan right now is the removal of evacuation orders, allowing citizens to return home.
Unfortunately, for some citizens, there will be no home to return to. The number of homes lost to wildfires has not yet been formally released, but every single one is a huge loss for the family who once lived there.
I am extremely grateful for the kindness and generosity of many citizens in our region who have been making donations to assist those who have lost so much.
While we in the Okanagan have been understandably focused on the local wildfire activity, on the international scene, our federal government has been focused on intense negotiations with the United States to avoid future punitive tariffs on Canadian-produced goods sold in the United States.
Late Tuesday evening, President Trump announced that there was a pause in the potential tariff deadline due to the fact that a deal between Canada and the United States may have been reached.
As a member of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I can also confirm that Conservatives are relieved that there is now a three-day delay on new U.S. tariffs, and that we are looking forward to seeing the new and excellent deal that is being finalized.
As our leader made it clear, we expect and we believe that this deal should include an end to tariffs on Canadians.
At this point, we do not know any of the terms, conditions, or possible capitulations that may have been agreed to by the government; however, there are also times that we, as Canadians, must stand together united to protect our trade interests with our largest trading partner.
This is clearly one of those times. As more details are revealed, I will provide more information in future reports.
Before I close this week's report, I would like to move on to a different topic and question.
Every resident who was impacted by the recent wildfire activity was impacted in different ways. To be candid, some have shared with me some experiences that are troubling and point to the need for improvements to be made.
Considering that we continue to witness large-scale evacuations due to wildfire threats, how satisfied are you with the current evacuation process and approach?
